The Royal Star & Garter

“Caring for the ex-Service Community since 1916”

The Care Homes Guide are delighted to be able to tell you about the Royal Star & Garter, a charity that has been providing extemporary nursing and therapeutic care to for disabled ex-Service personnel since 1916. Their current Richmond home opened in 1924 .

The Charity has now embarked on an ambitious programme to build new care homes around the country in areas where a need is identified. For the first time, they will include the ability to offer dementia care to address this growing need and state-of-the-art facilities will be able to offer care for young disabled Service Personnel.

The Royal Star & Garter Solihull homeThe Solihull Home, in the West Midlands, is the first of these prestigious new purpose-built care homes to provide the best modern surroundings to its residents. The home opened in September 2008 and has since been nominated and subsequently won the Elderly Care (more than 60 beds) category in the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards 2009. These Awards seek to acknowledge the contribution made by designers, architects, and the owners of care homes, hospitals and other care schemes to the well-being and quality of life for those in their care. The 15 bed Dementia unit called The Roundel Wing, has been generously funded by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. The remaining 45 beds are for those requiring nursing care.

Britain ’s most senior military medic, Lieutenant General Louis Lillywhite, – a former Governor of the Charity – said, when visiting the Solihull home :

“The thought that has gone into the design is to be seen at every turn and the recognition of the home’s quality with the Pinders Award is richly deserved.  Similarly the quality of care is evident.  It was a stimulating visit and it was particularly heartening to see both the enthusiasm and interest of those involved.”

The Charity has secured planning permission to build a second home next to Hampton Court station which it hopes to open in 2012, and is in the process of identifying an appropriate location for a third new home.

"Over the last few years the Charity has made tremendous progress implementing plans to build new state-of-the-art homes across the country to provide the best care for the ex-Service community” said former Chief Executive Lynn McDougall, “ Our home in Solihull, which opened in the summer, has been nominated for a number of awards and we hope to emulate this success with our new Hampton Court Home.”  Lynn added , “I would like to thank everyone who has supported our application and helped make this move possible.”
